UK Airport Drop-Off Charges Explained — And How Fare 1 Handles Them

Most UK airports now charge for terminal drop-offs. Here is which airports charge, how much, and how Fare 1 handles these fees as part of your transfer.

If you have taken a taxi or private hire vehicle to a UK airport in the last few years and noticed a charge you did not recognise on the bill, you have likely encountered the airport drop-off fee. These charges — sometimes called kiss-and-fly fees or terminal access charges — have spread across UK airports since the early 2020s and now apply at almost every major terminal in the country.

For passengers booking a pre-booked chauffeur transfer, understanding how these charges work and how Fare 1 handles them removes one of the more confusing parts of a transfer booking.

Which UK Airports Charge for Drop-Off?

The short answer is: most of them.

Heathrow charges for vehicle access to all terminal forecourts via an Automatic Number Plate Recognition system. Charges apply to drop-off as well as pick-up in the short-stay zone.

Gatwick operates a similar system for both the North and South Terminals.

Stansted has a drop-off charge for the terminal forecourt, with a free-of-charge zone located a short walk away.

Birmingham Airport applies charges to the terminal zone forecourt.

Southampton Airport has a drop-off charge for the terminal front.

Bournemouth Airport currently maintains a simpler access model with lower or no drop-off fees, though this can change and should be checked at the time of booking.

Manchester, Bristol, Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh all have adopted some form of access charge for terminal drop-off in the recent years.

Charges vary by airport and vehicle dwell time, ranging from approximately £3 to £8 for a standard drop-off. The charge is typically triggered by ANPR cameras reading your plate as you enter the charged zone and again as you leave.

The Free Drop-Off Zone Problem

Most airports also maintain a free drop-off zone — a car park or road section set back from the terminal, from which passengers walk the final distance with their luggage. The distance varies considerably: at Stansted this is a manageable few minutes; at some larger airports the free zone is a 10 to 15 minute walk, which with heavy luggage is a meaningful inconvenience.

For a self-organised lift in a private car, the free zone is a reasonable compromise. For a professional chauffeur transfer where the service proposition is door-to-terminal delivery, it removes the core value of the service.

How Fare 1 Handles Drop-Off Charges

Fare 1 does not route you through a free drop-off zone. Your driver delivers you directly to the terminal entrance.

Drop-off charges at applicable airports are included in your fare at the time of booking. Your quote from book.fare1.co.uk reflects the total cost including terminal access. There is no separate line item presented at the end of your journey, and no conversation about who pays what.

This matters because airport drop-off charges have a habit of appearing as an unwanted surprise. Passengers who booked a quoted fare with some operators have found the drop-off charge added at the end as an extra. Fare 1's fixed pricing covers all foreseeable costs end to end.

What About Pickups? Are Those Different?

Arrivals pickups are typically subject to higher charges than drop-offs, since vehicles dwell longer while waiting for passengers. At Heathrow, for example, the short-stay car parks have per-minute pricing once a vehicle has been in the zone for a set period.

For Fare 1 arrivals transfers, drivers use the official meet and greet facility rather than the short-stay car park. This is a designated zone for pre-booked chauffeur services and is typically priced more favourably than general public short-stay parking. Any applicable fees are accounted for in the overall fare structure — they are not passed to you as an unexpected addition.

Tips for Departure Day

Allow time for the forecourt. At Heathrow particularly, terminal forecourts are congested during peak hours. Your driver will account for this, but if you are on a very tight departure window, factor in the possibility that the drop-off itself takes five to ten minutes from kerbside to the terminal entrance.

Check your terminal. This sounds obvious, but Heathrow's five terminals are on different forecourts. Arriving at the wrong terminal forecourt and walking to the correct one is a significant time cost with heavy luggage.

Nothing extra on the day. With Fare 1, your fare is confirmed before you book. No drop-off charge, no waiting time outside the free window and no booking fee is added at the point of payment — Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are all accepted at the fare shown on your confirmation.
