Saga Cruises has built its reputation on intimate ships, high service ratios, and a no-under-50s policy that creates a decidedly calm on-board atmosphere. The brand's Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure are modern boutique ships that consistently earn strong passenger loyalty.
Saga's primary UK homeport for cruises is Dover, with occasional sailings from Southampton. Understanding your departure port and weighing up Saga's own coach transfer service against a private chauffeur will help you start the holiday properly.
Dover or Southampton?
Saga sailings depart from Dover Cruise Terminal (Western Docks) for the majority of UK itineraries. Some itineraries, particularly those routing westward into the Atlantic or Mediterranean, depart from Southampton terminals.
Your Saga booking documentation will clearly state the embarkation port. Share your ship name and sailing date with Fare 1 at booking — we handle both ports.
Saga's coach transfer — versus a private chauffeur
Saga's standard holiday package includes a return coach transfer from your home area. For many passengers this works well. A private chauffeur may be the better choice when:
- You live outside a Saga coach catchment zone or the nearest pickup point adds significant travel time.
- You have substantial luggage or medical equipment that is awkward on a coach.
- You have mobility requirements that a private door-to-door vehicle handles better.
- You prefer a private, unhurried experience with no group coach timetable.
A chauffeur transfer from southern England to Dover costs approximately the same as upgrading to a private-hire seat on Saga's own coach service — and with Fare 1 you are door to terminal directly.
Journey from Southampton to Dover
Dover Western Docks is approximately 130 miles from Southampton — typically 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes via the M27/M3/M25/M20. On a Saturday morning the M25 section and the A2/M20 approach to Dover can be slow.
We recommend leaving Southampton by 07:30 on a Saturday for a Saga boarding that opens at 11:00. Weekday sailings allow a slightly later start.
Vehicle choice for Saga passengers
Saga's passengers are 50-plus by policy — often couples in their 60s and 70s travelling with two large suitcases each and occasionally a walking aid.
- Standard Estate. Right for most Saga couples — four cases plus carry-on fit without compromise.
- Executive MPV. Preferred when a passenger has a folding wheelchair, mobility scooter (note: mobility scooters require a van or specialist accessible vehicle — please enquire), or when three or four passengers share the run to Dover.
Drop-off at Dover Western Docks
Dover has a clear drop-off zone at the terminal entrance. Porter trolleys are available. Your driver unloads bags, you check in with your Saga cruise card. The ship is typically a 5–10 minute walk from the check-in hall via covered walkways.
Return (disembarkation) transfers
Saga disembarkation is typically orderly — approximately 07:30 to 10:00, colour-coded luggage tags. Book your return with Fare 1 at the same time as your outbound transfer for the 5% return discount. Fares over £250 earn a further 15% off.
