Brighton is Hampshire's closest major city to the east and one of England's most distinctive destinations: the Royal Pavilion, the seafront with its two piers, the Lanes and North Lane independent shopping districts, a dense concentration of restaurants and bars, and a packed events calendar year-round. From Southampton the route is approximately 65 miles along the south coast, joining the M27 eastbound through Fareham and Chichester, then the A27 or A259 along the coast into Brighton.

It is one of the UK's better inter-city routes by road — largely dual carriageway, with pleasant views of the South Downs National Park along the A27 section — and it runs freely outside of peak periods.

The A27 Coastal Route

The standard routing from Southampton to Brighton follows the M27 east through Fareham and Havant, picking up the A27 at Chichester and continuing through Worthing and Shoreham into Brighton. This coastal route has been progressively improved over the years, though there remain some single-carriageway stretches through Arundel and around Worthing that can back up in peak conditions.

An alternative is to head north to the M3 and approach Brighton from the north via the A23/M23, which is sometimes faster on a Friday afternoon when the A27 around Worthing is congested. Your driver will monitor live conditions and choose accordingly.

Journey times:

  • Off-peak or early morning. Around 75–90 minutes.
  • Daytime off-peak. Typically 85–100 minutes.
  • Friday afternoon or bank holiday weekend. The A27 through Worthing can queue significantly; allow 110–130 minutes.
  • Saturday morning. Generally free-flowing; around 80–95 minutes.

Brighton for Events

Brighton has one of the most active events calendars on the south coast. Brighton Festival (the UK's largest arts festival) runs each May, filling the city with music, theatre, and performance across dozens of venues. Pride in Brighton, typically in early August, is one of the UK's biggest LGBTQ+ events and draws very large crowds from across the country. Brighton and Hove Albion matches at the Amex Stadium (technically in Falmer, just outside the city centre) attract regular sell-outs in the Premier League.

For any of these events, self-driving into Brighton is complicated by limited parking and road closures. A chauffeur drop-off at a central point — the Pavilion, the Old Steine, or near the Lanes — and a return pick-up arranged for the evening is a straightforward way to enjoy an event without logistics management in the background.

Nights Out and Late Returns

Brighton's nightlife is concentrated around the Lanes, St James's Street, and the seafront, with late venues running into the early hours. The last train from Brighton to Southampton is typically mid-evening, meaning anyone planning a proper night out must either find accommodation or self-drive — neither of which is ideal after a full evening out.

A pre-booked return with Fare 1 — either at a fixed time or available on-call — gives complete flexibility. The late-night run back along the A27 takes around 90–100 minutes at that hour, and you are deposited at your front door rather than at Southampton Central station at midnight with the onward journey still to manage.

Practical note. When booking a late-night return, give your driver an estimated pick-up time and confirm by message or app notification about an hour before. Your driver will head to the agreed pick-up point — wherever in Brighton is convenient — rather than requiring you to navigate to a specific location.

Brighton as a Day Trip

For a full-day visit, the combination of a morning Fare 1 run east with a same-day return in the evening earns the 5% return discount and leaves the entire day free for the city. A reasonable plan from Southampton: depart around 09:00, arrive in Brighton for 10:30, spend the day between the Royal Pavilion, the Lanes, the seafront, and lunch — then return collection around 18:00 for arrival home around 19:30.

Practical Tips

The Lanes vs North Lane. The Lanes (in the old Fishing Quarter) is dense with jewellery, antiques, and independent fashion boutiques in a warren of narrow alleyways. North Lane (around Gardner Street and Kensington Gardens) is edgier and more contemporary. Both are within easy walking distance of a central drop-off.

The seafront in summer. Brighton beach is very busy from late May through September. The area around the piers and Palace Pier tends to be the most congested for vehicle access; drop-off on a side street slightly inland is often quicker.

Vehicle choice. For a group of friends on a night out, the Executive MPV or Standard MPV carries four to six people comfortably and keeps the return fare per-head competitive with train alternatives.
