Bristol Airport sits at Lulsgate Bottom in North Somerset, around 8 miles south of Bristol city centre on the A38. It handles a solid range of European routes through carriers including easyJet, Ryanair, TUI, and KLM, plus some transatlantic services. For passengers based in Hampshire and the south coast, Bristol is an increasingly attractive option — particularly when Southampton Airport's route network does not cover the specific destination, or when fares are significantly more competitive out of Bristol.

From Southampton, the most direct route is approximately 75 miles heading west: the M27 westbound to the M271, then picking up the A36 north through the Wiltshire countryside, joining the M4 briefly before coming south on the M5 to the A38 approach to the airport. It is a pleasant drive and, outside peak hours, comfortably under two hours.

Route and Journey Times

  • Off-peak or early morning. Typically 85–100 minutes.
  • Daytime off-peak on a weekday. Around 100–115 minutes.
  • Friday afternoon or bank holiday weekend. The M27/M271 junction and the M5 south of Bristol can slow; build in 130–150 minutes.
  • Summer weekend. The A36 through the Wylye Valley runs freely but the M5 can queue around the Bristol Ring Road; allow 120–140 minutes.

The A36 is the most rural section of the route. It is well-maintained dual carriageway for most of its length through Wiltshire, but there is less opportunity to make up time here than on motorway sections. Your driver will assess live conditions and may route via the M4 directly if that is quicker on a given day.

Bristol Airport's Layout

Bristol is a single-terminal airport, which simplifies the logistics considerably. Drop-off is at the main terminal entrance on the front forecourt. There is a short-stay zone for kerbside drop-off; longer waits require the car park. For Fare 1 arriving collections, your driver meets you in Arrivals inside the terminal.

The airport has been undergoing expansion in recent years and terminal capacity has improved significantly. Security queues are generally shorter than at the larger London airports, though peak summer Saturday mornings are the exception.

Parking vs. Chauffeur at Bristol

Bristol Airport's car parks are run by a third-party operator. Pre-booked parking in the on-site car parks runs from around £8–10 per day for the cheaper options, rising steeply for closer or express zones, and typically requires a transfer bus to the terminal from off-site. For a 10-night trip, the comparison with a fixed chauffeur fare can be surprisingly close — and the chauffeur option involves no bus transfer, no multi-storey navigation with luggage, and your car is not sitting on an exposed site for a week.

For shorter trips of a day to four or five nights, the convenience argument for chauffeur strengthens further. A single professionally managed transfer is simply less complicated than organising car park reservations, locating the correct bus, and then reversing the process on a tired return journey.

South-West Flights — When Bristol Makes Sense

Bristol's route network complements Southampton Airport well. Where Southampton's typical offering is strongest on domestic UK and short-haul European routes, Bristol has a wider range of international charter destinations and some US-gateway routes that do not operate from Southampton. Passengers from Hampshire heading to, for example, transatlantic destinations or certain Spanish and Portuguese islands will sometimes find Bristol the most practical starting point.

The 75-mile westward run from Southampton makes this viable in a way that the longer London airport journeys are not — you are not adding hours of travel time relative to, say, driving to Heathrow.

Vehicle Recommendations

For this westward run, vehicle choice comes down to group size and luggage. Solo or paired travellers are well served by the Standard Saloon or Executive Saloon. The A36 section through Wiltshire is a pleasant drive and the Executive Saloon's motorway composure makes it a worthwhile upgrade for anyone making an early-morning departure after a short night.

Groups with holiday luggage should consider the Executive MPV (Mercedes V-Class) which handles Bristol's single-terminal curb drop-off simply and has the capacity for the full luggage complement of a family of four or five.
