What actually decides the journey.
North or South Terminal
Gatwick's two terminals are linked by a shuttle, which makes arriving at the wrong one survivable rather than costless — it is a monorail ride with your luggage and about fifteen minutes. Airlines move between the terminals more often than at most UK airports, so the flight number is the reliable answer and the airline name is not. We use the flight number.
Why Gatwick is a longer drive than the mileage suggests
Southampton to Gatwick is 81 miles against Heathrow's 67, but typically 2 hours 1 minute against 1 hour 26 — around 40 per cent more time for 20 per cent more distance. The reason is that there is no motorway between them: the options are the M27 east then the A27 and A24, or a long way round on the M25 to the M23. Both are slower per mile than a motorway, and both fail at different hours.
The early-flight conversation
For a 06:00 departure from Southampton we would set a pickup around 02:45. That is a genuinely unpleasant hour, and we would rather ask whether an airport hotel the night before is the better purchase than sell it to you anyway. From Waterlooville and Portsmouth, Gatwick is closer than Heathrow — 62 and 65 miles — which changes the arithmetic for passengers on that side of the county.
