The business airport, and the 20-minute rule
London City is built around short-haul business travel and its defining feature is speed: check-in closes 20 minutes before departure rather than the usual 40 to 60, and the walk from security to gate is a few minutes. It is the one UK airport where arriving 90 minutes early is genuinely wasted time — and equally the one where being ten minutes late is fatal rather than survivable.
Getting there from the south coast
Southampton to London City is a pre-set route, and it is the longest of our London airport runs in time rather than distance because the last few miles are through east London rather than on a motorway. That last section is what we plan around: the M3 part is predictable and the Limehouse part is not.
Why the arrivals side is easy
London City has one terminal and a small one. Wheels-down to kerbside after a European short-haul is usually under fifteen minutes with hand luggage, which is faster than any other London airport by a wide margin. Our driver meets you in arrivals with a name board and there is not far to look.
