Gatwick to Southampton Cruise Terminal — distance, timing and the M25 question

Gatwick to the Southampton cruise terminals is 80 miles and close to two hours in typical traffic. Which route the driver takes, how much buffer an embarkation day needs, and why this run is longer than Heathrow's.

Gatwick to Southampton looks close on a map and is not. Measured on our own routing engine, Gatwick to Ocean Cruise Terminal is 80.1 miles and about 1 hour 58 minutes in typical traffic — against 65.6 miles and 1 hour 22 minutes from Heathrow. Fifteen extra miles, but well over half an hour of extra driving.

The reason is that there is no motorway between them. Heathrow sits on the M25 with the M3 running straight down to the M27; Gatwick sits on the M23 with nothing heading west except the A27 coast road or a long way round the M25. Both options are slower than a motorway and both fail in different weather and at different times of day.

If you can choose your arrival airport

For a Southampton cruise, Heathrow is the better arrival airport on every measure that matters: closer, faster, more long-haul routes, and a more predictable drive. If your itinerary gives you the choice, take Heathrow.

Gatwick still makes sense when the flight is a European short-haul that only serves Gatwick, when the fare difference is large, or when you are flying in the day before and the extra 35 minutes is irrelevant. It is on same-day connections that the difference bites.

Timing an embarkation day from Gatwick

Working back from a terminal arrival at 12:00 on a summer Saturday:

  • Leave Gatwick by 09:30. Two hours of driving plus a genuine buffer for the A27 and the M27 approach.
  • Land by 08:00 if you are connecting the same day — and that assumes a short-haul arrival with hand luggage only.
  • Long-haul same day: do not. A transatlantic arrival into Gatwick plus two hours of driving plus a check-in close has no margin at all.

The M27 between junctions 4 and 3 and the dock approach roads are where the last twenty minutes disappear on a turnaround Saturday. We build that in when we set the pickup rather than discovering it on the day.

Which terminal you are actually going to

Southampton's five cruise terminals sit behind two different dock gates:

  • Dock Gate 4 (Eastern Docks): Ocean (CT2), QEII (CT4)
  • Dock Gate 10 (Western Docks): Mayflower (CT1), City (CT5), Horizon (CT6)

They are a couple of miles apart and up to twenty minutes apart on a busy morning. The terminal is set by the berth, not by the cruise line, so the same line uses different terminals on different sailings. Send us the booking reference and we confirm it from that.

Flight tracking and waiting

Give us the flight number and we track the inbound aircraft from departure, so the pickup time moves with the aircraft rather than with the schedule you booked against. The first 60 minutes of waiting after landing is included.

For a Gatwick arrival that matters more than it does at Heathrow, because the drive that follows is longer — an hour lost at the terminal is an hour you do not have before check-in closes.

What it costs and what the price does

Gatwick to a Southampton address is quoted before you book and locked at that number. Airport charges, where they apply, are shown as their own line on the booking form rather than folded into the fare, so you can see what is a fee and what is the journey.

See Gatwick transfers for terminals, drop-off charges and meet points, or Southampton to Gatwick for the pre-set route price in the other direction.

Luggage, honestly

Two people on a fortnight's cruise are usually two large cases plus hand luggage, which is already at the limit of a standard saloon. Four people with four cases need an estate or an MPV. Tell us the case count when you book — it costs nothing to specify and it is the difference between a smooth pickup and a re-shuffle at the kerb.
