The straight answer, what changes it, and how the price compares with the train, the coach and airport parking. Distance, drive time, waiting rules and what is included.

Fixed-fare offers are paused just now.

Any fixed-fare route price quoted below was a limited-time promotion and is not running at the moment — we will be opening them again. Everything else in this article still stands, and every journey is quoted upfront on our standard rates before you book.

The short answer: Southampton to Heathrow is one of our pre-set routes, so it has a fixed price rather than a meter — £99 for a standard saloon or estate, the same in both directions, agreed before you book and unchanged afterwards. The live number and what it covers are on the Southampton to Heathrow route page.

The longer answer is about what does and does not change that figure, because "how much is a taxi to Heathrow" usually means "what will I actually be charged when I get there".

The journey itself

Around 67 miles, typically 1 hour 26 minutes. It is M27 to M3 to the M25 anticlockwise, and almost the whole thing is motorway apart from the first and last few minutes — which is why it is quicker than the mileage suggests.

The stretch that decides your journey is the M25 between junctions 12 and 14. For a departure before 09:00 we build the Sunbury-to-Heathrow queue into the pickup time. For an evening flight we leave earlier rather than drive faster.

What is included in the fixed price

  • The whole journey, door to terminal.
  • Flight tracking on the inbound direction, so an aircraft that lands two hours late does not need a phone call.
  • 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, which covers a full-flight baggage reclaim at Terminal 5 or Terminal 2.
  • Meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board, rather than a kerbside guess.

What sits outside it

  • Heathrow's own drop-off charge. Every UK airport charges vehicles to enter the terminal forecourt and Heathrow is no exception. We pass it through at cost and show it as its own line on the booking form, so you can see what is a fee and what is the fare. There is a free alternative at the Park and Ride with a shuttle bus if you would rather avoid it — the booking form offers it.
  • Larger vehicles. The fixed price covers a standard saloon or estate. An MPV or minibus for the same journey is quoted on our published per-mile rate. Four people with four cruise cases need the bigger car, and it is better to know that before the driver arrives.

Nothing is added after the journey. No meter, no day-of re-quote, and the fare is locked when you book even if our rate sheet changes before your pickup date.

How it compares

Train. Southampton Central to Heathrow means a change — usually Woking or a London terminal and then the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line. Two or three hours door to door with luggage, and two peak-time adult tickets plus the Heathrow leg is not far off the fixed fare once you have paid for both. For one person travelling light, the train wins on price. For two or more with cases, it usually does not.

Coach. National Express runs Southampton to Heathrow direct and is the cheapest option by a distance if you are travelling alone and your flight time suits the timetable. The catch is the timetable: coaches do not move for a delayed flight, and a missed connection on the way out is your problem.

Driving and parking. Fuel plus two weeks of Heathrow parking is normally more than two fixed-fare transfers, before you count the drive at 03:00 and the walk from the car park. We wrote the arithmetic out in Southampton Airport parking vs a chauffeur — the shape of it is the same at Heathrow.

Booking from outside Southampton

The fixed fare is set for pickups in the Southampton SO14 to SO53 zone, which reaches further than the city — Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford, Romsey, Totton, the New Forest edge and Lymington are all inside it. Winchester has its own Heathrow fixed fare at a lower price, because it is nine miles closer.

Anywhere else is quoted on the published per-mile rate from your postcode, still agreed before you book. See the areas we cover for measured distances from each town.

Getting the fixed price

One thing worth knowing: the fixed price travels with the route page's booking link. Open Southampton to Heathrow and book from there. Typing the same two addresses into the booking form by hand quotes the journey on the per-mile rate instead, which on this route is usually higher.
