Luton is north of London on the M1 corridor — a budget-carrier airport hosting easyJet's primary base plus Wizz Air, Ryanair, and TUI. For Southampton travellers it's the third or fourth London airport choice for cost-conscious flights to Europe.

The chauffeur run

Distance: ~110 miles via the M25 / M1. Time: 2:00-2:30 off-peak; 2:30-3:00 in rush hour. Fixed-fare from Southampton: £170 (standard saloon). On our published fixed-fare schedule.

Vehicle category options at the per-mile rate: Executive saloon ~£195, MPV ~£220, minibus ~£280.

What makes Luton different

Two things.

Physical barrier + card payment exit, not ANPR. Most UK airports use ANPR cameras to read the driver's plate and post-bill. Luton still operates a physical barrier at the drop-off / pickup exit, with card payment to lift it. This means slightly longer driver exit times on busy mornings — we factor this into pickup-time calculations.

Drop-off surcharge: £7 for 10 minutes; £1 per minute beyond. The driver completes the drop fast — usually under 5 minutes — so this is well within the included time.

Pickup-at-terminal IS allowed at Luton (unusual for the major London airports). The driver can wait briefly at the kerbside meet-point holding a name board, rather than parking in short-stay.

When Luton wins

For Southampton travellers:

  • Wizz Air routes that don't exist at Gatwick — Eastern European destinations (Sofia, Tirana, Wroclaw, Bratislava).
  • easyJet routes where the Luton schedule fits better than Gatwick.
  • Ryanair when Stansted is the alternative. Luton's £170 chauffeur beats Stansted's £220 for routes available from both.

When to skip Luton

  • Major destination served from Gatwick or Heathrow at similar fare: drive's shorter and surcharges similar.
  • Long-haul flight: Luton has very limited long-haul. Heathrow's the call.
