Driver handover on long trips

How we manage driver shift limits on multi-hour trips. Same driver where possible, handover when not.

UK driving-hours regulations apply to private-hire drivers. For trips that exceed the standard shift, we handle driver handover proactively.

Shift limits

PHV drivers operate under standard road traffic regulations, broadly:

  • Maximum continuous driving stretches before a break
  • Daily total driving hours
  • Rest periods between shifts

For multi-stop hourly hires of 10+ hours, this can affect whether the original driver covers the whole day.

Same-driver-all-day pattern

  • Up to 8-hour trips: same driver throughout
  • 8-12 hour trips: same driver if mid-day rest break is plannable
  • 12+ hour trips: likely handover scheduled

How handover works

If we need to switch drivers:

  • Handover location is planned in advance (a convenient parking spot)
  • Both drivers are briefed on your context
  • The second driver introduces themselves and confirms the schedule
  • You don't lose time — handover takes 5 minutes maximum

What you can do

For multi-day trips (e.g. Lake District multi-day), explicitly book the driver per-day rather than as continuous hire. Each driver fresh, full shift available.
