Holland America Line brings its classic mid-century-influenced ships to Southampton for summer sailings, typically featuring itineraries around the British Isles, Scandinavia, Iceland, and northern Europe. Ships such as MS Eurodam, MS Nieuw Statendam, and MS Rotterdam have all called Southampton home for seasonal departures.
The line's passenger demographic — often couples aged 60 and above, travelling with substantial checked luggage, formal eveningwear, and occasionally medical equipment — makes luggage capacity and a calm, unhurried chauffeur service more important than speed.
Terminal assignment
Holland America at Southampton typically uses Ocean Cruise Terminal (CT2, QEII area, Berths 38/39) or City Cruise Terminal (CT5, Berth 101). The specific terminal is confirmed in your cruise documentation. Share your sailing date and ship name at the time of booking and we will programme the correct route.
Ocean Cruise Terminal is accessed via the Eastern Docks, a different approach to City Terminal and Mayflower. On high-volume Saturdays when two or three ships are turning around simultaneously, the two dock zones have separate traffic flows — arriving at the correct entrance saves significant time.
Departure timing
Holland America boarding typically opens around 10:30–11:00 with all-aboard by 17:00. The line's passengers tend to arrive mid-morning to enjoy lunch on board on embarkation day. Aiming for a terminal arrival between 11:00 and 13:00 is generally comfortable.
If you are travelling from London, the West Country, or the Midlands, a departure that reaches Southampton no later than 12:30 gives you reasonable margin for motorway congestion and any terminal queue.
Luggage and vehicle choice
Holland America passengers frequently carry:
- Two large checked suitcases per person
- A garment bag for formal nights
- Medical or mobility equipment (walking frames, portable CPAP, occasional wheelchair)
For two passengers travelling with this volume, an Estate or Executive MPV is strongly recommended. The Standard Saloon boot may be tight with four large cases plus a garment bag.
- Standard Estate. Handles four large suitcases and garment bags comfortably. Good choice for budget-conscious couples.
- Executive MPV (V-Class). Recommended when mobility equipment is in play, or when three or four passengers are travelling together. Flat loading floor means no awkward lifting.
- Standard MPV. Works well for family groups of up to six with moderate luggage.
Your driver loads and unloads at the terminal. Holland America porters collect cases at the kerbside drop-off point — you carry only your hand luggage from the vehicle to check-in.
Drop-off procedure
At Ocean Cruise Terminal the vehicle enters via the Eastern Docks gate, following signage to the appropriate berth. The drop-off is a supervised kerbside zone — your driver transfers luggage to the porter trolley, you confirm your bags, and proceed to check-in. The process is smooth and unhurried on a well-managed morning.
Disembarkation (return transfer)
Holland America disembarkation runs from approximately 07:30 to 10:30, by colour-coded luggage tag. Our drivers collect from the terminal arrivals point and assist with loading. Book your return at the same time as your outbound transfer — the 5% return discount is applied automatically, with a further 15% off where the total exceeds £250.
