Fixed-fare offers are paused just now.
Any fixed-fare route price quoted below was a limited-time promotion and is not running at the moment — we will be opening them again. Everything else in this article still stands, and every journey is quoted upfront on our standard rates before you book.
The short answer: £130 for a standard saloon or estate, fixed in both directions, agreed before you book and unchanged afterwards. The live number and what it covers are on the Southampton to Gatwick route page.
Why Gatwick costs more than Heathrow
Heathrow is 67 miles from Southampton and Gatwick is 81 — but the price gap is wider than fourteen miles would suggest, and the reason is time rather than distance.
Heathrow is motorway almost the whole way: M27, M3, M25. Gatwick is not. The options are the M27 east then the A27 and A24, or a long way round on the M25 to the M23, and both are slower per mile than a motorway. Typical drive time is about 2 hours 1 minute against Heathrow's 1 hour 26 — around 40 per cent longer for 20 per cent more miles.
A car and a driver committed for two hours each way costs more than one committed for ninety minutes. That is the whole explanation.
What the fixed price includes
- The full journey, door to terminal.
- Flight tracking on the inbound leg — the pickup time moves with the aircraft, not the timetable.
- 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.
- Meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board.
Gatwick's own drop-off charge sits outside the fare and is shown as its own line on the booking form. Larger vehicles — MPV, minibus — are quoted on our published per-mile rate for the same journey rather than at the fixed price, which covers a standard saloon or estate.
North or South Terminal
Gatwick's two terminals are connected by a shuttle, but arriving at the wrong one still costs you fifteen minutes and a monorail ride with your luggage. Give us the flight number and we take the terminal from that rather than from a guess — airlines move between terminals more often than passengers expect. There is more detail in our Gatwick North vs South terminal guide.
How it compares with the train
Southampton Central to Gatwick Airport is a direct service on some departures and a change at Fareham, Havant or Barnham on others, at around two hours end to end plus getting to and from the stations. Two adult peak returns are not far from the fixed fare, and you carry your own cases through two platform changes.
For one person travelling light on an off-peak ticket, the train is cheaper. For two people with hold luggage, or an early flight where the first train arrives after check-in closes, it usually is not. A 06:00 Gatwick departure means a car; there is no train that gets you there in time.
Timing an early Gatwick flight
For a 06:00 departure from Southampton we would normally set the pickup at about 02:45: two hours of driving, a margin, and enough time at the terminal to check a bag without queuing against the clock. That is a genuinely unpleasant hour, and it is worth asking whether an airport hotel the night before is the better purchase.
We will tell you that rather than sell you the 02:45 pickup, because a passenger who arrives exhausted and misses their flight does not book again.
Where the fixed fare applies
The Gatwick fixed fare is set for pickups in the Southampton SO14 to SO53 zone, which includes Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford, Romsey, Totton, the New Forest edge and Lymington. Other towns are quoted on the published per-mile rate from the postcode — see the areas we cover for measured distances from each.
One practical note: the fixed price travels with the route page's booking link. Open Southampton to Gatwick and book from there rather than typing the addresses in by hand.
