Choosing a private-hire service involves an element of trust. You are getting into a vehicle with a driver you have not previously met, in some cases late at night, in some cases in an unfamiliar area. Understanding the safety infrastructure behind the booking is reasonable and useful.
This article covers the safety features built into every Fare 1 journey.
Driver vetting
Before a driver dispatches a single booking, they pass a verification process that covers criminal records, licensing, medical fitness, and vehicle compliance. The detail is covered in our driver background checks article, but the key points:
- Enhanced DBS check. The higher-level criminal record check, covering spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and relevant police intelligence.
- Council PHV licence, verified directly with the issuing authority. Not just the paper licence.
- DVLA endorsement history. We pull the driver's DVLA record and screen for driving behaviour.
- Group 2 medical fitness. The same fitness standard applied to lorry and bus drivers.
- Hire-and-reward insurance on the vehicle. Standard car insurance does not cover paying passengers; we verify the correct policy is in place.
These checks repeat annually. A driver who passed checks at hire has also passed them in the last twelve months.
Live GPS tracking
Once your journey is underway, the vehicle's position is tracked in real time through the Fare 1 driver app. You can view the vehicle's live location through your own app or the tracking link sent with your confirmation.
This serves two purposes. The practical one: you can see where the vehicle is while waiting, which removes the uncertainty of wondering whether the driver is two minutes away or fifteen. The safety one: the journey route is on record, including start time, route taken, and end time.
Share-trip
During a journey, you can share your live trip status with a contact — a family member, a colleague, a friend. The share includes:
- Your current location on a map
- The destination
- Estimated arrival time
The contact does not need the Fare 1 app to view the share. This is particularly useful for late-night pickups from airports or venues, or any journey where someone at home wants to know you have arrived.
In-app driver chat
Once a driver has been assigned to your booking, in-app chat is available. This allows you to communicate with the driver directly — to confirm a specific meeting point, to let them know you are running a few minutes late, to ask a question about the vehicle — without exchanging personal phone numbers.
Chat history is retained. If there is a dispute about what was communicated before or during a journey, the chat record is part of the booking record.
Professional liability insurance
Fare 1 drivers carry hire-and-reward insurance, which covers passengers as occupants of the vehicle. In the event of an incident, passengers are covered under the policy. This is a legal requirement for private-hire operation in the UK and is verified by us as part of driver onboarding and annual re-verification.
A note on airport and late-night pickups
For late-night airport pickups, the safety features above apply in full. The driver is tracked, the meet and greet happens in Arrivals rather than at a kerb outside, and your trip share link is available throughout. For passengers travelling alone late at night, sharing the trip with someone before boarding is a low-effort way to keep someone informed.
If something goes wrong during a journey
If you have a safety concern during a journey:
- Use in-app chat to communicate with the driver or dispatch team.
- In an emergency, call 999. UK emergency services have priority over everything else.
- If you need to end a journey early for safety reasons, ask the driver to stop at a safe, public location. The fare will be adjusted accordingly.
After the journey, contact the support team at book.fare1.co.uk with the booking reference. All journey data — route, timing, communications — is retained and available to inform any follow-up.
Summary
The safety infrastructure behind a Fare 1 booking is not a marketing claim. It is a set of concrete systems: vetted drivers re-verified annually, live GPS tracking on every trip, share-trip available to any contact, in-app chat with a record, and verified hire-and-reward insurance on every vehicle. These exist because the people booking transfers are trusting us with their safety, and that trust needs to be backed by something real.
