Southampton Airport arrivals guide — reclaim, pickup and onward travel

What to expect landing at Southampton (SOU): a single terminal, a short walk, where a pre-booked car waits, and how long the onward journeys really take.

Southampton Airport (SOU) sits in Eastleigh, and its great virtue is that it is small. One terminal, one arrivals hall, and a walk from the aircraft door to the kerb measured in minutes rather than in transit trains and travelators.

If you have only ever arrived at Heathrow or Gatwick, the first thing to recalibrate is timing. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes from wheels-down to being in a car is normal here, and on a quiet arrival it is less.

What happens after you land

Most stands are walk-off or a very short bus ride. The terminal is a single building, so there is no inter-terminal transit and no question of which arrivals hall you want.

Baggage reclaim is one hall with a small number of belts. For a short-haul arrival with a partly-full aircraft, bags are frequently on the belt before the last passengers reach it. Border control is straightforward for domestic and Common Travel Area arrivals and short for international ones by any big-airport standard.

Where we meet you

In the arrivals area, with a name board. It is a small enough space that finding each other is not the exercise it is at Terminal 5.

Give us the flight number and we track the inbound aircraft from wherever it took off, so an early landing means an early driver and a delay moves the pickup rather than requiring a phone call. The first 60 minutes of waiting after landing is included, which at Southampton is generous rather than necessary.

Southampton Airport Parkway

The railway station sits beside the terminal, about a two-minute walk. It is a genuinely good option if you are travelling light and going somewhere on the line — London Waterloo, Winchester, Bournemouth.

It stops being a good option with hold luggage and an onward leg at the far end, which is most cruise passengers and most families.

Where people actually go from here

Measured on our own routing engine, in typical traffic:

  • Ocean Cruise Terminal — 5.5 miles, about 24 minutes. The shortest airport-to-ship transfer in the country. There is a fuller guide in Southampton Airport to the cruise terminal.
  • Southampton city centre — a few miles, typically under twenty minutes off-peak.
  • Eastleigh — 2 miles.
  • Winchester — 10 miles, about 23 minutes.
  • Fareham — 13.6 miles, about 25 minutes.
  • Bournemouth — 33 miles, about 51 minutes.

Each town has a page with its own measured distances — see the areas we cover.

The pickup charge

Southampton Airport, like every UK airport, charges vehicles to enter the pickup area. We pass it through at cost and show it as its own line on the booking form rather than folding it into the fare, so you can see what is a fee and what is the journey.

On a very short run — the terminal to Eastleigh, or to the docks — that charge plus our minimum fare is most of the price rather than the mileage. It is worth knowing before you see the quote. Details, including the free options where an airport offers one, are on our Southampton Airport transfers page and in airport drop-off charges explained.

Departing from Southampton

The same virtues run in reverse: a small terminal means a shorter check-in-to-gate time than the big airports, and the standard advice to arrive two hours before a short-haul departure is more generous here than it needs to be. Ninety minutes is usually plenty, and the airline's own guidance for the specific flight beats any rule of thumb.

We still set pickups against the airline's advice rather than ours, because a passenger who misses a flight on our timing has a fair complaint.
