Windsor is one of the most visited towns in England for good reason. The castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, Windsor Great Park offers 4,800 acres of parkland and woodland, Eton College sits just across the Thames, and Legoland Windsor Resort is one of the UK's most popular family attraction destinations. From Southampton, the journey is around 55 miles — an easy run up the M3, joining the M25 briefly at Junction 12 before turning north on the A30 or cutting across on the A332 to Windsor town centre.
It is close enough to do comfortably in a day, and far enough that organising the logistics of parking, route-planning, and navigating a busy town centre on a peak day can absorb more of the trip than it should.
The Route
The most direct routing is M3 northbound from Southampton, continuing past Basingstoke to Junction 3 where you pick up the A322 or continue to J12 of the M25 to approach Windsor from the south. Door-to-door from Southampton to Windsor town centre typically takes:
- Off-peak or early morning. Around 55–70 minutes.
- Daytime weekday. Around 70–80 minutes.
- Weekend midday (especially school holidays). The M3 runs well but Windsor town centre approaches can slow; allow 80–90 minutes.
Windsor's road layout around the castle and High Street can become very congested on summer weekends and during events. Having a driver manage this — and collect you from a pre-arranged point later in the day — removes the most stressful element of a day trip.
Windsor Castle and the Great Park
Windsor Castle is open to visitors most of the year, with the State Rooms accessible when the Royal Family is not in residence. The castle entrance is in the town centre off Castle Hill, and the queues at peak times can be substantial. For visitors arriving by chauffeur, the drop-off is straightforward; you are not hunting for a car park and then rejoining the queue on foot.
Windsor Great Park, accessible via the Long Walk from the castle's George IV Gate, extends all the way to Virginia Water in Surrey — a 3-mile avenue of horse chestnuts and limes that is one of the finest tree-lined walks in England. A chauffeur transfer means you can walk the Long Walk in one direction without needing to loop back to a car.
Legoland Windsor
Legoland Windsor sits on the western edge of Windsor, off the B3022. It is one of the UK's most heavily-visited family theme parks, and on peak days (school holidays, bank holidays, and dry weekends from May to September), access roads and the car park can be congested for well over an hour before the park opens. Pre-paid parking is strongly recommended if you are self-driving, but it remains a lengthy process.
Arriving by chauffeur at Legoland involves a simple drop-off at the resort entrance. The kerbside approach is separate from the main car park and avoids the entire queuing-for-a-space process. With young children in the vehicle, this alone has a real value. Collection at the end of the day can be arranged for a specific time or on-demand, depending on how the day goes.
Eton College and Town
Eton College sits immediately across Windsor Bridge from the castle and attracts a steady flow of visitors for its historic buildings and cultural significance. The town of Eton itself is small and pleasant, with independent shops and restaurants along the high street. It is an easy walk from Windsor via the pedestrian bridge — and having a driver means you can cross freely without timing your return to a car park ticket.
Events at Windsor
Windsor hosts a number of significant annual events including the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May, the Order of the Garter procession in June (which draws large crowds along the processional route through Windsor town), and various concerts and events in the Great Park through summer. On these days, town-centre parking is severely restricted. A chauffeur transfer is one of the few stress-free ways to arrive and depart.
Practical Tips for the Day
Book a return leg at the same time. A same-day return qualifies for a 5% discount on the return leg, and having the pick-up pre-arranged means you leave when you want to rather than when a train or coach departs.
Give an approximate collection window. Day trips do not always follow the exact schedule planned. Let your driver know you want collection around a particular time and they will confirm an hour or so before.
Vehicle choice. For a family of four or five, the MPV or Executive MPV is the most comfortable choice and handles a buggy or folded wheelchair alongside standard bags without difficulty.
